What is a missionary?

A missionary is one who is “sent;” particularly, one who is sent on a mission. That is what Luke describes in Acts 13:1-3 in which Paul and Barnabas were missionaries from the Church at Antioch, sent out to preach the Gospel to the Gentiles.

The Biblical term for missionary is “evangelist.” An evangelist proclaims the Gospel, a preacher of the good news that Jesus has sacrificed His life so that all may have eternal life if they believe in Him. A pastor is an evangelist; a missionary does not have to be a pastor or an elder to be considered an evangelist.

Y.E.S. encourages and assists missionaries in every way possible knowing that missionaries must “work the works of Him that sends us, while it is day; for the night is coming, when no man can work.” Y.E.S. recognizes both men and women as missionaries and believes that missionaries can evangelize through a variety of activities that have direct or indirect contact with people, including, but not limited to, church planting, i.e., starting new churches, teaching in schools, providing food and shelter to children in an orphanage or homes, building homes and community facilities, providing community health care services, operating recreational camps, and evangelizing via the Internet.

How is one called to be a missionary?

God will direct you through the work of the Holy Spirit. This direction may come through a variety of ways: study of His Word, prayer, circumstances, awareness of a need, testimonies or encouragement from those serving in ministry, etc.

The Lord may call you to a specific ministry and give you a clear vision of how you can serve Him. Or He may simply give you a heart burdened for a need and a desire to serve, with a willingness to follow wherever He might lead. back to top

What are the qualifications for becoming a missionary?

A candidate must have:
• A born-again experience.

• Submission to Christ.

• A consistent walk with Christ.

• A demonstrated desire to be used by the Lord to reach those who have not accepted Christ as their Savior.

• A reasonably thorough knowledge of the Bible.

• A desire to share that knowledge.

Age limits and scholastic standards do not disqualify candidates. God uses common people! back to top

What if I don't feel that I've been "called" to mission service but still have a strong interest in Christian service in some capacity?

That’s okay. Not everyone who has a strong desire to serve the Lord should become a missionary, either inside or outside their native country. There are a lot of opportunities and needs to be met through individuals who, for whatever reason, don’t feel that they should make a full-time commitment to a ministry. Contact us to find out more information about current needs and opportunities for service. Y.E.S. is seeking individuals who would like to lead or participate in an evangelistic project for which they have a passion to share the Gospel.
